Shibuya | Tokyo | Japan | 2012
I lived in Tokyo 2011-2014, and walked this intersection at last once a week as it was very close to my office. "Shibuya Crossing" -- the world's busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. At rush hours, at every signal change, 3,000 people cross the street like a well choreographed movement. It is a sort of dance, a procession, and certainly in Tokyo it is a routine. Standing on the curb waiting for the next signal turn. there is quietude even though cars and buses are zipping by and overhead are the filled tracks of Shibuya rail station (the third busiest rail in the world). Through it all, however, what permeates is the ever-present soft, polite voices -- whispers -- of the Japanese culture...

Trümmelbach Falls | Lauterbrunnen | Switzerland | 2018
I could never have imagined the notion of a 'whisper' emerging so beautifully from one of the most thunderous places I have witnessed.. Here, in the dark, cavernous caves, every minute 1 million liters of icy water from the Eiger, Junfrau, & Mönch glaciers above channels its way through black silken rock. As I stand to shoot, my fingers are cold and my Gore-tex jacket covered in water spray. The roar is so loud, the spray is both heavy and fine, the hissing of the water is constant. Yet here there is a tranquility as I listen and observe Nature's amazing melodious 'whisper'...

Angkor Wat | Cambodia | 2013
As the morning lifts the veil of the pre-dawn dark skies, Mother Nature is 'whispering' with her ribbons of soft, muted colors. Her veil is equally mystical, magical, and powerful as the massive temple complex I explore. There is a solitude and sense of harmony within, though adjacent to here the morning streets begin their buzz of scooters, trucks, cars, livestock and people.
All together, there is indeed a powerful force here...

The Drake Passage To/Fro Antarctica | 2017
It is peaceful with "whispers" in a most profound way. The isolation so far away in the vast open icy waters of the roughest ocean in the world exude a serenity. Yet, this is amidst the crashing sounds of massive 30 foot waves and the howling 40-50 knot winds, Our icebreaker ship travels at 15 knots for 600 nautical miles -- from Ushuaia to Antarctica, and back again on the same route -- thrashing and bobbing quite violently and very thunderously for 40 hours each way.
This is, The Drake...

Hakone | Japan | 2014
While living in Tokyo, in May 2014 the week after the very busy “Golden Week” celebrations, we went for a weekend to a traditional ryokan in Hakone, Japan. We had heard of but had never before been to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. It was a sunny weekend and here at the foothills of Mt. Fuji the winds were very brisk. The gorgeous sculptures on the hillsides were indeed breathtaking as after all this is an open-air museum on a scalloped hillside. As we meandered we stepped into the Picasso Pavilion. The art of course was amazing. As I was in one corner, the wind outside was passing by the doorway making a distinct whistling sound. I turned and had this image. The winds literally and loudly ‘whispering’ as they whisked by…

Venice | Italy | 2008
Our son (Kian) is 5 years old on his first immersive international trip. As we enter Piazza San Marco, it is a bustling busy day in central Venice with its vibrant mix of locals and visitors -- and, the famous hundreds and hundreds of pigeons. The plaza was crackling with lots of noises, arguably too noisy against the beautiful surrounding structures and 16th century history of St. Marks Basilica and Procuratie Vecchie. My eye goes to Kian laughing and chasing pigeons, and I see some neon lights in the background. In this moment, the noise disappears and I see 'whispers'...
